Sebastian Sagun Jr. is a graduate of Global Academy’s Diploma in Professional Culinary Arts. The beginning of his culinary journey is a very inspiring one as it started with a young man who had a dream and chased after it with passion, perseverance, hardwork, and a lot of humility. Sebastian Jr. or Baste started with Global Academy as a steward or kitchen assistant. He worked in our Pasig Branch for three (3) years.
His head steward and co-stewards described him as reliable, a fast learner, very friendly, was always in a positive disposition and most of all God-fearing.
As a steward, his roles included washing the dishes, cleaning the kitchen, preparing the different kitchen tools, equipment and ingredients needed by the students and chefs. His exposure to kitchen work allowed him to observe and familiarize himself with the techniques in cooking and baking. With some chef instructors who were willing to entertain some of his questions after classes, he developed an extreme and deep interest in becoming a culinarian one day.
The day came when he was awarded a partial scholarship through the endorsement of chef instructors and the approval of Chef Benny Ledesma, the School President. It was not a smooth journey to start as some challenges and odds presented their way to his back-to-school life. He constantly prayed to God for strength to be able to push himself more to do better. Baste would work harder whenever challenges came his way. He continuously practiced his skills outside of the classroom and would even bring his works to school to ask his Chef instructors for their feedback. He also believed that knowledge is not only learned inside the classroom or kitchen so he also involved himself in different events and extra-curricular activities as a student assistant as much as he could.
Baste was one of the students chosen to be part of the 4th Philippine Culinary Cup last July 2013 as part of the team of Chef Greg Villalon, Chef Vic Sanchez and Chef Joi So under the Filipino Cuisine category.
The competition experience was very nerve-racking and intense for a first-timer like Baste but it became all worth it after his team won the highest gold! This victory was a validation of all his hard work and sacrifices.
Who would not be happy for someone like Baste? Many saw him transform from a boy to a man who is now seeing all his dreams unfold. Be inspired by his story and don’t let any hardship get in the way of fulfilling your dreams!
